All programs and code included in this distribution, which are not
covered by other conditions distributed with the code, are
Copyright (C) Paul Moore, 1992.
This specifically includes changes made in order to port software (while
not affecting the conditions applied by the author to the underlying
software).
This file should be included with any distribution of this software.
Failure to do so constitutes a violation of the conditions of use.
If you modify this software in any way (enhancements, bug fixes,
tailoring for your environment, porting to another machine or OS), the
modified version is STILL covered by all of the conditions described
here. In addition, you must include documentation clearly stating what
changes you have made.
Disclaimer
----------
I am not a lawyer, and hence I am not sure how much enforcability the
following conditions have under the various relevant laws. However, these
are my INTENTIONS for this code, and I expect all users to follow the
conditions, regardless of legal technicalities!
Support
-------
This code is supplied as it stands. I make NO claims for usability or
fitness for a specific purpose. The code was developed for my own
purposes, to run on my machine, and satisfies these purposes. I do not
guarantee that the program will work, or even compile, on your machine. I
do not even guarantee that the documentation included is an accurate
description of what the code does! If the program wipes your hard disk,
and then proceeds to reconfigure your machine to make it unusable, you
must assume that is what I intended it to do, and I am happy that it
performs its function well!
I do not offer any support with this package. If you contact me with
queries, I may answer with a simple "Sorry, I can't help", or I may not
answer at all. If you contact me to report a bug, and provide a fix, you
will have my thanks, but not much else (I won't undertake to distribute
the fix...)
As a brief guide, I will almost certainly NOT respond to questions on how
to use the program. I may help with installation questions - it depends
on how much work for me is involved. I will not send copies of supporting
programs which were omitted from the distribution - most such programs
are publicly available somewhere (try the Newcastle server) and sending
out individual copies of programs costs me money. Whether I respond to
bug reports depends on the amount of work involved, the seriousness of
the bug, and whether it affects me or not!
My apologies if the above seems unhelpful, but I simply do not have the
time or resources to offer support. (Of course, if you wanted to offer me
huge amounts of money...)
Conditions Of Use
-----------------
This code is distributed free of charge. You are not obliged to provide
any form of distribution service. However, if you do so, you must abide
by the following conditions.
You may not charge any fee for distribution, other than media and postage
cost. You may not include any charge to cover the costs of setting up,
maintaining, or advertising, a PD library. (This latter clause may cause
problems for small PD libraries wishing to distribute my programs. If so,
I'm sorry, but these are my conditions. Contact me if you want to
negotiate a special exception. They are like this because of a recent
case where Beebug were charging around UKP 6.00 for PD disks. This was
considered unreasonable by a number of people, including myself, and I do
not want to be associated with high-profile PD libraries charging higher
fees than small operations). You may not profit from the distribution of
this code.
Note that the above prohibition on making a profit from this code
includes the use of the code as any form of incentive for buying your
products. I am specifically including in the above prohibition, the
practice of including free "PD software" disks along with new hardware or
software. These programs may NOT be included in any such package. (Again,
this condition was prompted by a recent case involving Beebug. Contact me
if you feel you have a valid case for an exception).
You may use this code for your own purposes in any way you like. This
covers the inclusion of the whole or any part of the code into your own
programs. Such programs may be for your own use, freely distributable or
commercial.
If you use any of this code in your own programs, you must credit me in
your documentation - referring to the specific code which I wrote.
I would prefer it if you distribute the source of any of my code which
you use (in the case of functions linked in from libraries, source for
just the functions used rather than for the whole library would be OK).
However, I am not REQUIRING this, as I feel that such a condition would
tend to encourage people to write their own versions "just in case" they
get into legal problems with my conditions. (The GNU project has had
similar problems, with its general public license).
Contacting Me
-------------
I can be contacted on E-Mail at either of the following addresses:
pmoore@cix.compulink.co.uk
gustav@morpheus.demon.co.uk
Alternatively, if you do not have access to E-Mail, you can contact me by
post, at
10, Mulberry Rise,
Firdale Park,
Northwich,
Cheshire,
CW8 4UQ
England.
Please only use this as a last resort - I am much less likely to reply to
postal messages than to E-Mail. Also, I will be moving house in the near
future, so this address may be out of date by now! Certainly, don't use
it after December 1993.
Please do not contact me by phone.
Note that I do NOT provide a distribution service for my software.
Requests for copies of my programs will, in general, be completely
ignored. If you send disks and return postage, I will send the disks back
(but I will not supply the software - I do not keep my sources in a
"distributable" form, so I would have to do quite a bit of work to create
a set of sources/executables which you could use). If you send disks but
no return postage, I WILL KEEP THE DISKS.
Earlier Versions of This Software
---------------------------------
I would like these conditions to be applied to all versions of my
programs currently in circulation. This particularly applies to the "no
support" clauses - in earlier distributions I offered more support, which
is something I no longer feel able to do.
Therefore, I would appreciate it if people with older versions of my
software would copy this file into those versions. These conditions will
then apply to those versions as well.
I realise that this section is totally unenforceable in any legal sense.
If this could affect the legal status of the rest of this document, this
section should be considered as a comment, having no legal status.
As an alternative way of looking at it, any version of my programs NOT
containing these conditions is now deemed to be obsolete. No support will
be given for such obsolete versions.
